Brutally Fun…Leesville Gap RR
I had forgotten after 5-years how truely crazy the road surface is at this race.
Mathew and I raced according to plan in the top 5-riders to the base of the climb at which point I said good luck and watched him dissappear up the climb with the lead group as I settled into my best effort (which was Not with the leaders
)
We had survived about 4-miles of major potholes, patches, dirt road/gravel, dropped bottles and riders scattered all over fixing flats. I had to laugh with Mathew about how there was no way we were going to avoid getting a flat other than sheer luck given the road conditions…we were lucky.
Once over the top of the climb I joined another rider and TT’d across the top picking up another 5-6 riders in our category before hitting the next climbs at which point we dropped all but one rider. Coming through the feed zone I was about 200 yards behind Mathew and had the good fortune of having Linda in the feed zone with fresh COLD fluids to finish the ride with. I caught Mathew at teh top of the feed zone and we TT’d down into the valley picking up another 7-8 riders before the last left turn. Several of these riders were not pulling their share so Mathew and I attacked to see if we could get away…we did for about 500 meters then got caught by the group again at which point we sat up and rotated through the group until about 1.5 k’s to go. At that point I had Mathew on my wheel and pulled on the front until about 220 meters to go…Mathew took off with a huge burst of speed but the rest of the group was ready. Mathew finished 2nd in the group…not sure yet where we were overall in the results but we had a great time working together and following our race plan.
Not sure I’ll do this race again next year…we’ll see, it hurts alot

Wow, sounds like you and Matthew make a good team. If this was your first race together imagine what you guys can do once you get everything fine tuned. Nice job!
