Myofascial Release (MFR)

Body Concepts is happy to announce that we now offer Myofascial Release!  Our very own Linda Bailey, CMP brings varied experience to her massage work.  Linda has worked in the Physical Therapy world for years in the Bay Area as an Aide, and alongside Rob Kopitzke performing the John Barnes techniques of Myofascial release.  As a Person Trainer, Pilates instructor and former competitive athlete, Linda understands the exceptional performance one requires from their body and how massage can improve performance and reduce injury.  Linda has participated in almost every sport and therefore has an understanding of what is required by the body for a particular activity and how to address that in her massage work.   As a previously long-term injured person, Linda also understands that the body needs to relax and that a gently approach to deep tissue and Myofascial release is necessary for chronic and reoccurring pain.   Linda is trained in Swedish, Deep tissue and the John Barnes style of Myofascial release techniques.  Available hours include evenings.

What is Fascia?

This video from Real Bodywork is a wonderful explanation of fascia.

What is Myofascial Release?

(From the John Barnes website)

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate.Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)The use of Myofascial Release allows us to look at each patient as a unique individual. Our one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which our therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. We promote independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.

Hands-On Treatment

Each Myofascial Release Treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams or machinery. This enables the therapist to accurately detect fascial restrictions and apply the appropriate amount of sustained pressure to facilitate release of the fascia.

What Linda’s clients have to say about her work:

“I highly recommend Linda Bailey’s massage services to anyone, but I would especially recommend her to those experiencing limitations to their activities due to pain or discomfort.  The day I went to see Linda, I had a spasm in my lower back, hip pain, and a terrible headache from my tight neck.  When I left, I not only felt great relief from each of those discomforts, but I felt… well, “blissed out” and so much better!  My circulation and energy just seemed to be functioning the way it was intended to.  Several days later, I was actually surprised to find myself sitting cross-legged on the floor, without the pain in my hip that had kept me from that position for the previous several months.  Linda truly has a gift for this work and I am very grateful to have been a recipient!”

“As an elite rower, I have been in the selection camp for the United States National Team men’s quad since January. This process places extreme demands on an athlete, both physically and mentally. Linda understands both sides of this equation better than any massage therapist I have ever worked with. She is highly perceptive to even subtle physical disturbances, to the point that her sense of touch borders on artistic. Linda is able to consistently get my body centered after I have been through a hard period of training.I have noticed that my sessions with her are just as important for helping my mental clarity and alleviating my stress. You have to summon a lot of mental and emotional energy to stand out in such a competitive selection process, and I noticed after my sessions with Linda that I would always return to training with a renewed hunger to compete. Now that the selection process for the US Team is complete, I will be going to the World Championships in Korea this summer. I couldn’t have done it without Linda and she is the only massage therapist I truly trust.”

I came to Linda for a massage knowing that it was going to be relaxing and soothing. What I didn’t know, was that I was being
fixed under her healing touch. I have suffered from an old neck injury for many, many years. I have seen so many people over the years who had tried to help me and although it would help for short periods of time, nothing ever stuck. Linda was all to aware of my neck issue and was very compassionate and understanding with what I was dealing with. We had a brief discussion about what
I wanted out of my massage that evening, then she went to work. I definitely got what I had asked for and more. It has been several weeks now since that first massage and my neck has not bothered me once. I don’t think there are words adequate to describe what a game changer that is for me, but it is truly amazing! Thank you Linda for your special gift!!”

“Linda is a very thoughtful, professional, and skilled massage therapist.  She has made a big difference in addressing my aches and pains and I highly recommend her services.”

Linda’s previous experience with body movement just enhances her ability to sense and feel what’s needed and desired in a massage. I’m looking forward to my next appointment!”Kathi A.
